DJI Phantom 2 Vision+ v3.0

DJI Phantom 2 Vision+ v3.0: What's in the box?
Here’s a little clip by DJI introducing the Phantom 2 Vision+ including some recorded footage from the drone itself:
The drone comes in a slick minimal white box which some might say looks similar to Apple’s style of design. Once you crack open the box, if you’ve owned a drone before, the first thing you’ll notice after you open everything up is that it’s slightly heavier (1284g total weight) than your average drone due to the superior build quality.

There’s also a bunch of other items included in the box, such as tools, instruction manuals, propellers (two sets), optional blade protectors, stickers, tape, grommets, spares and some other small items. The instruction manual is super easy to follow and is a open spread step by step manual laid out very simply with pictures to follow along.
There are two sets of 4 propellers, just in case you managed to damage a set somehow! Of the four propellers, two are for the front, and two for the back and the markings are easy to follow and even if you somehow can’t follow those instructions, the propellers are threaded differently to make it pretty much impossible for you to get it wrong, and there’s plenty of warning stickers placed carefully throughout the product for areas that require a reference to the manual!
There’s a USB slot with a rubberized cover, which allows you to install firmware updates, and update GPS info which can give you warnings if you’re ever using the drone in controlled airspace; which could help prevent you earning yourself a couple of years behind bars for violating airspace safety rules – Almost like your very own battery operated lawyer… Very cool!
14 Megapixels/1080p Camera
The camera is a 14 megapixel which records in 1080p and it comes with a nice plastic lock on attaching securely to the gimbal, to prevent the mechanism from damage while travelling with the unit. There’s a MicroSD slot in the side of the camera area that includes a 4gb card, but i beleive you can expand it up to 32gb.
As marked, everything should be charged fully on first use! As is standard with electronics nowadays. The charger is very sleek with clean bright LED lights and includes different plugs for different locales. As with a few complex variations of the battery lights, it comes with a small simple to follow guide “cheat-sheet” which easily outlines the different LED arrangements and what they mean. One point of note is that it only comes with one charger cable, so out of the box, you could only charge either the controller or the battery, but as it is a universal cable charger, in this age I think most of us have a couple laying around the house anyway!
The controller itself is a top notch build quality with LED indicators and has a sturdy smartphone holder.
The Phantom 2 Vision V3.0‘s motor is the most efficient of the series yet, and also contains a clever GPS module filled with some safety-enhanced features which can return your little guy home if it loses radio contact… but always be sure that it’s fully charged before sending it off to school! It might not make it home if it doesn’t have enough juice!
After being tweaked over a few generations in the series, the Phantom 2 Vision+ motor is the most efficient yet DJI have produced
To connect it with the smartphone you’ve got to download the DJI app, and sign in to connect the service. From there you connect your phone to wifi using the controller as the access point. It’s an easy process, and once the green light appears on both devices you are locked and loaded! There’s a camera icon and once you tap it on, you’ve seeing alive stream of the drones camera straight to your smartphone! And there’s a little ticker on the right-hand side which states the speed, distance, altitude and charge of the device.
All it takes to get off the ground is to push the button twice to fire it on and start it up, if there’s low GPS connectivity you may need to calibrate the compass manually, but it was a simple process detailed in the manual which consisted of picking the drone up and spinning it in certain directions so it could get its bearings. Not a problem whatsoever.
Once everything was set up, all it takes is to hold the two sticks down and all systems were go! All I can say for the flight was… WOW.
I have never controlled a drone that handled like this. Extremely stable and smooth response, this is no drone designed for amateurs, but you definitely don’t have to be a pro to use this, and I’m 100% confident a novice level user could use the Phantom 2+ Vision with ease. The 1080p video stream looked top notch, and once it was downloaded to a big screen it did not disappoint. There are flashing LED indicators lights on the underside of the drone, two reds at the front and two green at the back, so you know which way it’s facing to control the drone when you’re not looking at the streaming video.
DJI claim a 25 minute flight, and I believe it could very well exceed that number. The in-built safety features do a VERY good job of making you aware the battery is running low. There is multiple early warnings and a horn like sound which alerts (maybe informs you persistently… it’s pushy, but in a good way) you when to reel her back in! You could very well make the 25 minute air time, but I didn’t want to risk it since at this point it’s very much still a nice shiny object!
Program a flight path using your smartphone with the 16 way-point Ground Station system. Tilt the camera up and down, take photos and shoot video all while the Phantom 2 Vision+ flies autonomously.
Some of the drones on the market today have been accused of not being “true drones” (these are quadcopters) as they require a human operator at all times, so they don’t fall under the “drone category”. Well I can say statement is definitely not true with the DJI Phantom 2 Vision+ 3.0! The Phantom 2 Vision series is has a featured product called Ground Station. This beautiful app allows you to set points for latitude, longitude, altitude and speed, so you can plot your points and have a completely hands off flight, which can also allow you to have the freedom to control the camera with greater precision as you can focus on the task at hand 100%.

Even if you lose signal with the drone it still completes it still follows the way-points and completes it’s mission! The controller has a powerful built in directional WiFi signal booster so if you point it at the drone it will stay in contact for up to an incredible 800m. Once it’s back there’s a option in the app you can select for a controlled descent one click and down it comes automatically.
I loved testing this model out. It was an absolute blast test driving this nifty piece of kit, and I would recommend the Phantom 2 Vision+ to a beginner or an expert. It’s so easy to use I honestly believe a grandma could work this thing! The lag on the stream delay from the drone to smartphone is barely even noticeable, if there is anything requiring your attention, you can be damn sure the controller and app let you know about it. At the price range, it’s certainly not an entry level model, but you really do get what you pay for, and this dominates every other model in it’s price range. It get’s a slightly less than perfect score for flight time because, well, who doesn’t want more flight time? I’d advise picking up an extra battery or two so you can rotate them on charge and have a backup.
To round things up, I have a belief that it’s impossible for anything to be perfect, but the DJI Phantom 2 Vision comes pretty damn close!
Totally awesome! I so want to get my hands on one of these and program flight paths to record, that would be so awesome! I love technology!
How the hell can you beat 25 minutes of flying time? That alone is a great feature and the fact that it does not weight that much and comes from a reputable company are also very nice features.
